Dear colleagues,

We are writing today with good news in the areas of student affairs and diversity and inclusion. To reflect the priority CU Denver | Anschutz places on these two areas, we are making the following changes to the leadership structure. On the recommendation of Provost Nairn and with the support of incoming Chancellor Dorothy Horrell, we are promoting Brenda J. Allen, PhD to vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion and Raul Cardenas, PhD to vice chancellor for student affairs, effective January 1, 2016.

Both had previously served as associate vice chancellors, Brenda since 2012 and Raul since 2011. Both will continue to report to the provost, and both offices span both the Denver and Anschutz campuses.
Diversity, respect and inclusion are key values held by CU Denver | Anschutz, and we’re fortunate to have someone as respected and accomplished as Brenda leading the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The office focuses on numerous elements of campus life, including: recruiting and retaining diverse students, faculty, and staff; maintaining an institutional climate of inclusiveness, respect and understanding for everyone; and expanding community-based programs to reduce health and educational disparities. It oversees the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs at CU Denver and the Office of Inclusion and Outreach at CU Anschutz.

Under Raul’s valued and skillful leadership, the Office of Student Affairs supports students throughout their university experience by helping involve them in a campus culture that engages and inspires them. The office helps students to realize their full potential every day, from applying to the university, enrolling in classes, creating their campus experience, joining clubs or affinity groups, or dealing with crises. It oversees the areas of Enrollment Management, Student Success, University Life, University Registrar, CARE Team and the Office of Case Management, and it soon will have responsibility for CU Denver’s student housing and wellness center.

Please join us in congratulating Brenda and Raul on their new titles and wishing them continued success.

Best,

Jerry Wartgow
