University Initiatives

Intellect, innovation, creativity

Periodically, the faculty and staff members of the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus initiate new intellectual and creative efforts that are larger in scope than the usual ones. Typically, these are interdisciplinary projects involving a significant number of individuals from more than one department, school or college and are launched or supported by significant internal and external funding. At the outset these are often referred to as “new initiatives” or “signature areas;” they may involve or lead to the formation of a center or institute, or they may remain more ephemeral efforts of fixed duration.

CU Denver has a number of academic programs that incorporate sustainability as part of the curriculum. These programs are varied and comprehensive, incorporating the principles of environment, economics and equity into their framework.

The university works to create a more seamless and integrated education experience for students from preschool through graduate level. This includes expanding students’ access to early learning, decreasing the achievement gap in elementary and middle school years, and improving students’ college readiness and college success. The work of the university bolsters the P–20 education work that the governor’s office has fostered in Colorado and supports the efforts of other institutions and organizations through collaborations.

P-20 initiatives at the university work toward enhancing teacher performance, creating applied research connected to teaching, learning and public policy, and improving the K-12 pipeline.

The university understands that a solid grasp of the math and science disciplines is essential in creating Colorado’s next generation of leaders, innovators and job creators. Programs and partnerships at the university result in breakthroughs in teaching and research that engage kids’ interest and imaginations in the STEM subjects.

The university is proud to be a partner in the Colorado STEM Network, the statewide coalition of businesses, government, education and community groups. CU Denver is helping to raise the standards of STEM education and prepare a workforce that is ready to meet the demands of a global, technology-based economy.

The University of Colorado Denver Office of P-20 Education Initiatives in partnership with the Colorado STEM Network hosts STEM education webinars, which highlight current STEM issues that are “hot topics” in Colorado and throughout the nation. Webinars are hosted in partnership with various groups and institutions, such as the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
