Initiatives

Periodically, the faculty and staff members of the University of Colorado Denver and the Anschutz Medical Campus initiate new intellectual and creative efforts that are larger in scope than the usual ones. Typically, these are multi- or interdisciplinary projects involving a significant number of individuals from more than one department, school or college and are launched or supported by significant internal and external funding. At the outset these are often referred to as “new initiatives” or “signature areas”; they may involve or lead to the formation of a center or institute, or they may remain more ephemeral efforts of fixed duration.

P-20

P-20

The University of Colorado Denver and the Anschutz Medical Campus is actively involved in creating a more seamless and integrated education experience for students from preschool through graduate level. This includes expanding students’ access to early learning, decreasing the achievement gap in elementary and middle school years, and helping to improve students’ college readiness and college success. The work of the university bolsters the P–20 education work that the governor’s office has fostered in Colorado, and supports the efforts of other institutions and organizations through collaborations.

P-20 initiatives at the university work toward enhancing teacher performance, creating applied research connected to teaching, learning and public policy, and improving the K-12 pipeline.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

The university understands the importance of inspiring children early on. A solid grasp of the math and science disciplines is essential in creating Colorado’s next generation of leaders, innovators and job creators. Programs and partnerships at the university develop breakthroughs in teaching and research that are engaging kids’ interest and imaginations in the STEM subjects throughout the state.

The university is proud to be a partner in the Colorado STEM Network, the statewide coalition of businesses, government, education and community groups. Concentration of the state’s focus on STEM education is vital to the development of tomorrow’s business leaders, scientists, researchers and educators. CU Denver is playing an important role in raising the standards of STEM education and in preparing a workforce that is ready to meet the demands of a global, technology-based economy.

The University of Colorado Denver Office of P-20 Education Initiatives in partnership with the Colorado STEM Network hosts STEM education webinars. The series highlights current STEM issues that are “hot topics” in Colorado and nationwide. Webinars are hosted in partnership with various groups and institutions such as the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
