Interprofessional Education / REACH Programs

for Quality and Collaborative Care

Interprofessional Education for Medicine, Dental, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, and Nursing students on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Fundamentals of Quality and Collaborative Care is the first step in the REACH/Inteprofessional Education curriculum. Entering students are placed into interprofessional teams of 4-6 students and complete a series of eight sessions.  Our teams remain together for two years and meet every six weeks to complete a series of specific tasks.  Embedded within the curriculum is an exploration of roles and orientations of the different professions involved, and skills building in teamwork and communication.

Clinical Transformations in Quality and Collaborative Care is the second step in the REACH/Interprofessional education curriculum.  Clinical Transformations is a simulation experience for students, and takes place at the The Center for Advancing Professional Excellence (CAPE). The CAPE has dedicated space and staff to perform a variety of sophisticated simuations with video monitoring and learner feedback.  During their simulation experience, all students undergo training in the TeamSTEPPS (Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) curriculum for clinical communications developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Department of Defense.  TeamSTEPPS is the most well-established, widely used and evaluation model.

Clinical Integrations for Quality and Collaborative Care is the third step of the REACH/Interprofessional Education Curriculum and is designed to give students practical experience of teams in a clinical setting.  Students work in interprofessional teams to complete clinical projects concentrating on team communication or patient education.  Using observational guides, students focus on the structure and function not only of a clinical team, but of their own student project team.  They synthesize their learning experiences at the end of the course when they present their findings to other student teams. 


Clinical Integrations is currently in pilot phase and involves several local clinical sites, including Craig Hospital, the University of Colorado Hospital Liver and Renal Transplant Center, the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse at Children's Hospital, the Veteran's Affairs Hospital, the Dominican Sisters Home Health Agency, and Salud Family Health Center. We are expanding and are interested in more partnerships!
