Health Systems, Management & Policy

As access to quality and affordable health care continues to be a national focus, the need for leaders in health systems, management and policy is expanding. Students in the Department of Health Systems, Management and Policy are preparing to be our future health practitioners, managers, researchers and policy leaders.

A degree in Health Systems, Management and Policy prepares students for careers that focus on the formulation and implementation of health care policy, the quality and cost of health care services, and the administration and management of health care organizations. Through coursework and practice based experience, our graduates become leaders in their field and meet many of today's healthcare challenges.

The Department offers a Master of Public Health in Health Systems, Management & Policy and a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Services Research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Master of Public Health - Health Systems, Management & Policy

The MPH program in health systems, management and policy trains students in the organization, administration, management and evaluation of public and private sector health programs and health system issues in order to prepare graduates for leadership careers in government, health care industry, and non-governmental organizations.

Students are provided the management tools needed to operate programs and organizations effectively. Students are also prepared in the analysis of health policy. Concentration coursework includes: managing individuals & teams; research methods; health policy; and health economics. Elective coursework includes: legal issues in heath care; ethical and legal issues in public health; quality of care; program planning and implementation; and health outcomes research.

PhD - Health Services Research

The mission of the Clinical Science doctoral program is to improve research-fostering patient care advancements by providing a formal, structured, and rigorous training programs in Clinical Investigation (CI), Health Services Research (HSR), and Health Information Technology (HIT). Graduates of the PhD Program will have the skills, knowledge, and experiences to be an independent study investigator. Course work is 30 semester credits, with an additional 30 credits of dissertation. Preliminary and comprehensive exams, as well as a colloquium and defense are highly suggested and/or required.

The Health Services Research (HSR) Track focuses on efficacy, outcomes, and cost efficiency of diagnostic, preventive, interventional, and therapeutic approaches. This discipline evaluates delivery, organization, and reimbursement in health care. Cost and access to care, outcomes, and patient satisfaction are studied endpoints. HSR includes identifying predictors of disease and determining the effectiveness of preventive interventions. The HSR Track includes biostatistics, evidence-based medicine, study design, health economics, and grant writing.
