Faculty Professionalism



The School of Medicine places a high priority on professionalism.  A climate of respect, civility and cooperation among students, residents, fellows, interns, faculty, administrators and staff is essential to achieving excellence in research, education, clinical care and university and community service.

​This Office of Professionalism is available to all faculty, housestaff and students of the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  "Students" are defined broadly to include all learners -- that is, medical students, graduate students, residents, clinical or post-doctoral fellows, or anyone associated with the School of Medicine -- who are receiving aducational instruction of any kind.  Discussions within the Office are designed and expected to be confidential and private except in specific circumstances that will be explained to each visitor.  All mediation is confidential under Colorado law, with limited exceptions.  For more information regarding the Office of Professionalism, click here.

​Nominations are now being accepted for the 8th Annual School of Medicine Faculty Professionalism Award.  Deadline for nominations is 5PM Friday, July 11, 2014. 

This award recognizes a full-time faculty member who has served as a role model for professionalism, as defined in the School of Medicine Rules.  According to the Rules, "Under the umbrella of professionalism lies an extended set of responsibilities that includes: civil and courteous behavior; respect for teachers, students, supporting staff and colleagues; service to the community; dedication to lifelong learning; and, for clinicians, empathy, altruism, compassion and other attitues and behaviors which represent the core traditions of the profession of medicine."  Faculty members are also expected to exhibit academic and institutional citizenship by contributing to the teaching, service and administrative activities of their department and the School.  The Faculty Senate would like to encourage nominations of all members of the community, including women and underrepresented minorities.  

The winner of this award will be honored at the School of Medicine Matriculation Ceremony in August 2014, and their name will be placed on the permanent plaque that is displayed in the School of Medicine.

A nomination packet may be submitted by any student, resident, faculty member or other member of the School of Medicine or UCD community.  A nomination form, which contains information about what should be included with the nomination packet, is available by clicking here.  A committee of faculty, residents and students will review all nominations and select the winner of the 2014 Faculty Professionalism Award.  All materials should be submitted by 5PM Friday, July 11, 2014 to:
