Educational Goals and Objectives

Residencies and Fellowships


Purpose:
All University of Colorado School of Medicine ACGME and GME programs must have goals and objectives (G&O) per ACGME institutional, common and specialty/subspecialty program requirements.  This webpage is a resource for program directors and coordinators when creating/updating competency based G&Os for residency and fellowship training.  Please contact Karen Potter, GME Director of Compliance, if you have questions.


ACGME Common Program Requirements July 1, 2011:
IV.       Educational Program
IV.A.    The curriculum must contain the following educational components:
IV.A.1.     Overall educational goals for the program, which the program must distribute to  
                residents and faculty annually;
IV.A.2.     Competency-based goals and objectives for each assignment at each educational
                level, which the program must distribute to residents and faculty annually, in either 
                written or electronic form. These should be reviewed by the resident at the start of each 
                rotation;
IV.A.3.     Regularly scheduled didactic sessions;
IV.A.4.     Delineation of resident responsibilities for patient care, progressive responsibility for 
                patient management, and supervision of residents over the continuum of the
                program; and,
IV.A.5.     ACGME Competencies - The program must integrate the ACGME competencies into the 
                curriculum… (All programs should refer to specialty specifics in program requirements)


ACGME Common Requirements for One-Year Fellowships:
IV. 
      Educational Program
IV.A.    The curriculum must contain the following educational components:
IV.A.1.    Skills and competencies the fellow will be able to demonstrate at the conclusion of the 
               program. The program must distribute these skills and competencies to fellows and
               faculty annually, in either written or electronic form. These skills and competencies
               should be reviewed by the fellow at the start of each rotation;
IV.A.2.    ACGME Competencies – The program must integrate the ACGME competencies into the 
               curriculum… (All programs should refer to specialty specifics in program requirements)


Process/Procedure:
Competency based goals and objectives must be; 
1. Created for the overall program, for each rotation/assignment and by PGY level as required in 
    IV.A.4. above.
2. Reviewed and updated at the annual program evaluation review meeting 
    [CPR V.C.1 – Program Evaluation and Improvement]
3. Attached to all PLAs as pertaining to the rotations/assignments of the PLA
4. Distributed annually  to residents, fellows and faculty:
          a. Supervising faculty must review the rotation specific G&Os with the resident/fellow at the 
              start of the rotation, and then should again review as part of verbal feedback evaluation
              by the faculty/supervisor of the resident.
          b. Programs must utilize New Innovations to distribute G&Os prior to the start of each
              rotation.
          c. G&Os must be available in the resident handbook and easily accessible to the residents 
              via program website, internal shared drive, or other electronic method.
          d. BEST PRACTICE: Programs should create a form (Materials Signature Template -
              Courtesy of 
the Dept. of Psychiatry) and provide annually to new and continuing residents 
              to sign and return acknowledging that they have received and read the G&Os.  The 
              forms should then be kept in each resident’s training file.
