Checklist for New Students

Congratulations on joining the CU School of Medicine!

The University of Colorado School of Medicine highly recommends adherence to the AAMC Application and Acceptance Protocols and the use of the AMCAS Choose Your School Tool best practices. Important school specific and national dates are listed below. 

All accepted students need to fill out and return the forms below before the stated deadline. All of the required forms can be found in your CUSOM Student Portal (https://apply.som.ucdenver.edu). The list may change so please continue to check in with us.

Deferment

As an accepted applicant you may request an opportunity to defer your admission to the School of Medicine in writing. You may ask for a deferral from the day you are accepted until our school specific Commit to Enroll deadline (typically 21 business days prior to the start of orientation).

If you decide that you are not ready to continue medical school or have an unexpected life event any time after you matriculate this should be discussed with the deans in the Office of Student Life.

Normally, deferrals are granted for extraordinary or mitigating circumstances that arise and create challenges for a student to enter medical school at that time. However, there are also some “once in a lifetime opportunities” which may come up for you as an individual, such that a request to defer also seems reasonable. Some examples include the birth of a child, competition in the Olympics, a Fulbright Scholarship opportunity, or acceptance to the Peace Corps. The School of Medicine wants students to matriculate when they have achieved a high degree of readiness to engage fully in the MD program. In general, deferrals are granted once for only one academic year. A special committee headed by the Assistant Dean of Admissions will consider all requests for deferment. Decisions made by this committee are final and cannot be appealed.

If you are classified by the University of Colorado as a non-resident at the time of initial acceptance, it is not possible to move to Colorado and during a year of deferral to establish residency in order to change your tuition classification. Your residency status is determined at the time of acceptance and will carry forward through graduation. 

Below are the requirements that must be met for a deferral:

• You must complete all required paperwork in the year you are accepted and pay the non-refundable deposit.
• You must submit a written request describing your reasons for requesting a deferral.
• For the actual year in which you will enter you must complete an AMCAS application where you will be placed in a special category called “deferred/delayed admission”.
• You may only apply to the University of Colorado during the year in which you plan to enter. If you wish to apply to other schools, you must withdraw your application from the University of Colorado. Your deferral will no longer apply and you will give up your seat in the class. 
• As a deferred student, you will not have to complete the secondary application, pay the AMCAS fee, or sit for an interview.
