A Message From the Chairman

Andrew Thorburn, Ph.D. Chairman
Andrew Thorburn, D.Phil.

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology! We are in the middle of a revolution in biomedical research and the discipline of pharmacology is at the forefront of applying the new understanding of biological and disease processes to improve medicine.

Building on this work, we are starting to see what 21st Century medicine will hold for us – a future where rather than developing treatments based on randomly trying things out, we will develop new drugs to target specific processes that we know are involved in the disease we are fighting. A future where personalized medicine will be a reality and it will be routine to tailor treatments for an individual rather than treating every patient in the same way and never knowing who will or will not benefit. A future where cutting-edge science leads to improved ways to tackle those diseases that continue to plague us.

Our department is devoted to moving quickly to this new era. Our faculty, students, postdocs and staff work at the leading edge in biomedical science and I encourage you to explore our web site to discover what we’re doing.

You’ll find a superb collection of scientists who are taking advantage of unparalleled facilities on a brand new biomedical campus – the largest such new development in the country.

You’ll find state-of-the-art research that places our researchers at the forefront of their fields.

You’ll find one of the most successful Pharmacology departments in the United States working closely with our colleagues in the School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy and School of Dental Medicine to build bridges between basic, translational and clinical research.

And, you’ll find that we are doing all this in a fantastic environment, in a place that is on the rise and in a region of the country with unparalleled opportunities to both play and work hard.

If you like what you see, please consider joining us.
