The Department of Anesthesiology includes ten critical care trained faulty
working in multiple intensive care units (ICUs) at the University of Colorado
Hospital (UCH) and the Denver Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital. ICUs staffed by anesthesia intensivists include the Cardiothoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU), and Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at UCH and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at the VA hospital.
Department of Anesthesiology faculty currently serve as Co-Medical Directors
for both the SICU and CTICU at University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) and Medical
Director of the SICU at the VA hospital. Faculty actively participate in hospital administration, education, and basic and clinical critical care research. Faculty participate and hold leadership positions on many critical care
committees throughout the hospital, including: quality improvement, trauma,
resuscitation, and executive OR committees. A Department of Anesthesiology intensivist serves as Medical Director of Hospital Nutrition. Faculty direct and teach the University of Colorado Fundamental Critical Care Support course, a multidisciplinary course dedicated to training residents and hospital staff in the identification and initial management of acutely ill or deteriorating patients. The group also provides specialized anesthesia care including cardiothoracic, transplant, and neuroanesthesia.
The Department of Anesthesiology sponsors an ACGME approved fellowship in
Anesthesia Critical Care/medicine.
At UCH and the VA hospital, we employ a multidisciplinary approach to critical
care. Team members include attending intensivists, critical care fellows, anesthesia and surgery residents, medical students, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapist, pharmacists, dieticians, and other frontline providers.
We hold a weekly didactic lecture series, journal club conference, and have
robust patient safety and quality improvement programs in each of the ICUs.
