The Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine

The Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine focuses on four areas of stem cell research:

  1. Stem Cell Biology - Our scientists are studying the mechanisms that drive stem cells to grow tissue, organs, bone and blood, as well as the role they play in disease.
  2. Stem Cells and Cancer - We are looking at cancer stem cells and their ability to maintain and grow cancer cells.
  3. Stem Cells and Disease - We are focusing on specific areas of disease, such as lung disease, muscle deterioration and the creation of fat cells which can lead to type 2 Diabetes.
  4. Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine - Reproducing and growing stem cells can aid in the repair of diseased or damaged cells. This area of research has profound implications in the areas of spinal cord injuries, blood cancers, Parkinson’s disease and skin diseases.

Our scientists are the first in the nation to:

  • To establish Phase 1 clinical trials that specifically test drugs that target cancer stem cells.
Differentiate iPS Cells and reprogram them back into skin cells.
  • Develop a mouse/human model that creates personalized medicine and shortens the length of time for bench to bedside research.
  • Differentiate stem cells into beneficial astrocytes which enable nerve fibers to grow in rodents with spinal cord injuries.
  • Conditionally immortalize blood stem cells and expand them indefinitely.
