Physical Server Hosting

Physical servers are hosted at either the Denver Campus or the Anschutz Medical Campus locations within the data center. The server can be provided by the end-user or IT Services. The cost of a typical server is $4,000 to $6,000 depending on performance requirements. Basic operating system maintenance such as patching and backup is included in a monthly service fee of $150.

Virtual Server Hosting

Virtual servers differ from physical servers in that efficiency is achieved by taking advantage of unused computing resources on a physical server. A typical server that is running a single application typically uses a fraction of the total processing capability. By installing specialized software on the physical server that emulates the hardware on the server, additional servers can be installed that utilize the excess capacity. This can potentially allow the customer to avoid the costs of purchasing additional physical servers.

Administration costs for virtual servers are not reduced as each virtual server requires the same maintenance as a physical server. Basic operating system maintenance such as patching and backup is included in a monthly service fee of $150.

Department –Owned Physical Servers

IT Services recognizes that some departments require them to maintain their own physical servers. IT Services can host the servers in the IT Services data centers at both the Anschutz Medical Campus and the Denver Campus. The cost is $150 which includes patching and backup. For departments choosing to house their own servers, the backup cost (up to 70GB) is $65.00.
